HAUNTED, I tell you. HAUNTED.
I have never read a book that has haunted me. When I speak too crossly to one of my children, or not crossly enough. When I am overly critical to a student, or I let something slide. When I let Mr. P out of my sight without telling him something good, or fail to really push my perspective when I feel like he isn't listening. All the time, I think about this book. I know it is fiction. I know it isn't real. But it COULD be, and it could have been me if my kid had a different temperment...my kid was a complete lovey dovey butterball, but if she hadn't MADE me be her mother at times, I wonder what might have been.
I have read several good books, seen a few good movies and even a play. But still, I always feel like I need to talk about Kevin.

Hotel sex is totally worth $12
Here is the bathroom. I am totally have a bubble bath in that sucker tomorrow after my run. BOO.YAH.
But my favorite part of nice hotels? THE MINI BAR. I rarely get anything out of it, I just love knowing that I can. I get per diem when I am away, and I usually don't even come close to spending it, so if I want a $3 bag of M&M's then I am going to get them. (Last year I got a glass bear fully of horrid gummy bears for $9. Totally worth it.) This hotel offers a little something extra in the mini-bar that I have never seen before.....

Might as well jump right on in.
The boat was very close to a Bass Pro Shop, so we stopped to look at all the fish in their giant fish tank. It is sort of like a redneck aquarium in there.
Then we stopped at a craft store so that I could buy supplies for my crocheting.
I have managed to master the chain stitch and am getting better at a single crochet. I have spent most of the evening on this square shown on Mr. P's ankle to demonstrate scale. I think I might actually like crocheting, but I feel ultra old, with my bucket o'yarn and needles next to my chair. I will say, that holding the yarn and concentrating makes snacking pretty difficult.
So, on tap for tomorrow---start figuring out my workout/work routine that works with my class schedule, gym schedule and Mr. P schedule. Plus, I just remembered this afternoon that I have to present a paper at a conference on THURSDAY, so I may want to take a look at that.

what I did today
- Slept through the alarm set for 5:30am and managed to drag out of bed at 7am. I set the alarm so early because starting next Monday I have to teach a class at 8am and the heat makes it impossible to run at times other than 7am and 7pm. I like TV at 7pm.
- I weighed in DANGEROUSLY close to scootching up a decade. I immediately logged into http://www.weightwatchers.com/, updated my weight and made a note to self to get shit together. asap.
- Started week 2 (note that week 1 happened several weeks ago) of my half marathon training. AND AND AND, I warmed up and stretched before I ran. Pain free the first mile (well, my hip/knee crap, lungs? different question), then a bit of pain the second mile. Managed a decent time for me. Stretched again. Iced hip.
- Made a frappe with my new Mr. Coffee Cafe Frappe. YUM. (Impulse buy yesterday because I was sure that it would help me through said early morning class starting next week.)
- Watered plants. Fell in love with my baby cucumbers all over again. Tried to decide how many times we are going to have to have Thai food based on the 450 peppers that are growing.
- Showered.
- Wrote three blog posts and deleted every.one. of them.
- Quit the gym. OF COURSE, you have to quit by the 20th so you don't get charged an extra month. I bet they change the form every day so that you are always a day late. fuckers. I want to quit the gym!
- Changed my address at the post office.
- Went to Chick Fil A for lunch and to read to decompress for class.
- Taught an hour and a half class about writing queries.
- Taught an hour and a half class about accounting for corporate bond issues.
- Graded projects while eating a Fage 2% with Honey yogurt thing. I almost threw it away because it was weird. But then it got a bit warmer and blended and then I liked it...but maybe not 4 points liked it. I added some Corn Flakes. Did you know that Kellogg's Corn Flakes contain high fructose corn syrup? Yeah, I didn't either.
- Came home.
- Made HOMEmade salsa/pico. Tomatoes, red onion, homegrown jalapeno/serrano/habanero peppers, fresh corn, black beans, garlic, cilantro, salt/pepper, red wine vinegar. DAMN it is good. and fresh. and delicious.
Now I am waiting for Mr. P to get home from his run, and we are going to eat the salsa/pico stuff on corn tortillas with some refried beans and a bit of 2% cheese. We have 8 days left in this house, and it can't happen soon.enough.
OH.MY.GOD. I have the Bachelorette on and I think one of the dudes got a tattoo with her name on it....what the hell man??? psych.o.
How was your Monday?
EDITED TO ADD: My iPod had died, and when I charged it the date/time was funky, so it logged my run at May 5, so it isn't showing up with my Nike girl. My next run (Wednesday) will be there.

INappropriate crushing
Anyway, a couple of college boys from my school created a website devoted to getting a hug from her, she found it, and decided that she might, in fact, give them a hug if they completed a series of challenges and she issued this declaration in her own video message.
SO, today, they will be walking a little old lady across the street. The little old lady is a friend's mom. So, if all goes well, I will be [Hotch-Friend-Friend's Mom-College Boys-Taylor Swift] 4 hug degrees from Taylor Swift.
oh, and yes, I will be there for the filming of said old lady walking.
WHAT?!?!?!
I wanted pizza for lunch anyway and it is right by the street crossing.
shut up.
ETA: I am in a green top leaning against the brick pillar on the very far right...you can see me if you squint!

fun Fun FUN
1. Long, slow run at the state park. It is the site of the HORRIBLY hard 10K that was our first race last year, and we thought it would be fun to see how we have progressed. Issue is that I am supposed to run 8 miles, but I think adding a GIANT mountain can count for some of that mileage.
2. Panera for refueling.
3. Avatar in 3D.
YAY!

Best ADVENT calendar EVA
A few years ago Mr. P got this whole thing started by having the 12 Days of Christmas for me where I got a teensie tinsie ornament from Hallmark every day for 12 days to go on cutie picture frames. He did this for two years.
The next year, I got a Peyton Manning themed Advent which included a Peyton ornament, Colts stocking, a KICK.ASS official 18 Jersey, a Peyton Manning rookie football card and a subscription to Sports Illustrated. No daily prize, but here and there. It worked for me. (no duh, right?)
The next two years I did Advent for Mr. P. Both times I got him Lego Advent Calendars, the first I got at the Lego store at Disney, and because he dug it so much, last year I ordered Playmobil, Lego and Littlest Pet Shop calendars for all of us. Then.it.happened.
Long story short, Mr. P didn't do anything for me for Advent and my feelings were crushed. THEN he had the gall to complain when he got an ice cream stand as his prize. (I personally liked the Lego prisoner, complete with handcuffs as one of his prizes, what? You don't see the Christmas in that?) Anyway, I got completely defensive and told him it was all him next year. I expected a season of Advent from him next year, which coincidentally is right.now.
I was sure he hadn't done it and had no plans for it. I even sort of called him out. (Yeah, I am a spectacular human being.) I got home today and on the mantle there was a prize, wrapped, for me. It was this:
For those not from around here, this is an artistic rendering of the iconic building of our University. Cool, no?
You know what is cooler? Mr. P made it for me. MADE it. That is his theme for this year, he is making me stuff. I am so excited. I made a comment to him that he should have saved this one for later, because it rocks so hard it would be hard to beat it. He laughed and said, "OH NO, it won't be. Just wait."
He knows me better than that. I CAN'T.

Race Day!
So luckily Mom decided she wanted to ride 1.5 hours to the race and back with us this afternoon! Maybe she can tell more stories like this:
(Precursor to story...Mom calls me and asks where she should go get a tire...someone put an arrow in her tire and ripped off her front license plate, so I told her Walmart and another local place that Mr. P uses for such needs.) And no, it wasn't Penny or I. I think.
Mom: I go to [not one of the places I mention] and ask them about a Goodyear tire and they had a Michelin for $110.
Me: Why did you ask me where to go if you were going to pick somewhere else?
Mom: Then I went to Walmart and they had the exact tire I wanted for $85 including installation and everything.
Me: Well, good.
Mom: A midget did it.
Me: They don't really like that word.
Mom: Oh, well I didn't say that to his face.
Me: Okay good.
Mom: (in a somewhat surprised voice) Anyway, he was nice.
Me: You don't say.
*********
Act 2
Last night was opening night of Miracle Worker. I have to say CK2 played quite a douche...and he did quite a good job! i actually enjoyed the story much more than I thought I would. Mom, Mr. P, Penny, and College Kid went and sat behind some people who will probably not want to be our friends...not even on Facebook. Yeah, we are those people, whispering a commentary and eating candy, albeit quietly during the play.
BUT, I almost lost it at one point:
Mrs. Keller: Eva, do you want a pickle?
Eva: You know how I love a pickle.
Simultaneously, one at my right and one at my left, Mr. P and Penny, "That's what she said."
*****
Act 3
I am well carbed and hydrated and I have my playlist ready to go assuming we can use the iPods. It is supposed to be gorgeous weather this afternoon, and I am actually really looking forward to the run. If the title of my post tomorrow is "Fuck that Trolley" you may want to avoid reading if you have an aversion to strings and strings and strings of cursing!

Was Spock right?
The reason I ask is because Tuesday is my work at home and get caught up on grading, prepping for class, reading papers, laundry, dishes, vacuuming, regaining sanity from the weekend day. And as part of the day I catch up on DVR, and on today's menu is 3 weeks worth of House. If you haven't watched and are going to...SPOILER ALERT!!! Click away from the blog.
A dictator in the midst of horrific genocide is dying. If you are his doctor, do you work your ass off to save him, knowing he will go back to his country and complete his mission? Or do you perform substandardly and let him die? Or do you mislead others and more or less kill him yourself?
There is a theory of moral development that suggests that a person with a lessor developed morality would sit at the red light and work their asses off to save the dictator. Without a more developed moral compass, people act to avoid punishment. Interestingly, this same theory states that the MOST morally developed would run the red light and kill the dictator.
How developed are you?
I wouldn't run the light.
Maybe even more telling, while I might WANT to do it, I wouldn't kill the dictator because I wouldn't want to go to jail.
What would you do in those situations?
Was Spock right, do the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one?

losing my shiznit
Last night Mr. P texted me and asked me out to dinner and a movie...we went to Applebee's where I had a FIVE point salad, which was ehh...but I supplemented with some tasty treats off of his appetizer platter. Then we went to see Julie&Julia, the movie I swore not to see because WHY oh WHY should another blogger get a damn movie when I want a damn movie. I super hearted the movie and felt like a complete shit because both of those women completely struggled to get their stories told, and well, let's be honest here...I haven't done jack worthy of a book, let alone a movie. We topped off our evening with a Lo-Cal Cherry Limeade and an early bedtime.
This morning, I ran at 5:45 where I saw a DEER and a BEAVER out and about. awesome. Ran over 5K and felt all spry. Got showered, packed my breakfast...I am now 'into' the Kashi Proactive cereal because you can have a CUP of it in your yogurt breakfast for the same points as 1/2 cup of Almond Flax nuggets and I am alls about the quantity. I also bought some pre-cut fruit called 'Hawaiian Blend' with mango and pineapple. I trekked to the transit (almost at a month now...getting habitual) and got into work right on time.
THEN, I opened my email and had MANY emails from students claiming to have the hamthrax or other illnesses they do not choose to get diagnosed so as to avoid getting the hamthrax from the clinic. ack. The administration has done everything but tell the students...claim swine flu and we will come to your house, cook you soup and go over the lessons individually with you. I can't say or do anything regarding these "illnesses", so while aggravating, I can deal. It is this one that sent me over the top:
I will not be in class (I really don't feel like it).
See, I have a clause in my syllabus that tells them they are to let me know when they are not coming to class as I expect them every day since it is a graduate class. This student took me very seriously. idiot.

le fait de manger propre
After I ate this, and watched the movie and started this post I started getting antsy, like if I stayed in this house one second longer I was going to have a partially hydrogenated corn syrup sandwich (on white bread)...so I took off to work. I got a bunch done. Then I did my campus 5K route and managed to get through all 5 K's still doing the running motion. So whoo hoo!!I went to the store to pick up a few "clean" eats, and decided on black beans and brown rice, with homemade guacomole (WOW), salsa and organic, all natural cheddar cheese...I was so hungry I snacked on some delicious cherries while I prepped:
Here is my complete dinner...yeah, it looks pretty gross in the photo, but it was delicious (brown rice, black beans, 1/2 grilled chicken breast, homemade guac (tomato, avocado, jalapeno, onion), and Pace picante...I was a bit concerned that the picante may be considered "processsed", but all the ingredients were regular food things and no chemicals, so I decided it would be okay.... Now we are all watching "Meteor" ... in addition to reality television, I love disaster movies...even made for television, awful, horrible disaster movies. I make my entire family watch them...every minute. So far this is not disappointing in the awful department, and I am super excited because when I was getting the link for the movie, NBC is having "Survival Sundays"...week after week of crappy disaster movies, sometimes just when you think life is so hard, something really great happens.
But, back to my clean food...I made some banana ice cream (frozen bananas in the food processor), and topped it off with some more cherries. (oh.my.god. if you are a fan of the bananas, this stuff is beyond good.)

I still have points left over for today, but considering this week I earned 40.5 Activity Points yet am STILL 43 POINTS in the hole, I think I will just call it a day and hope that my journaling, exercising and ONE day of clean eating will keep me out of the weight gains....(yeah, two birthday parties, Olive Garden, late night burgers and 7 buffalo wings add up really quickly, yikes!)
I may have taken the clean eating a bit more literally than most, but I am proud to say I had a whole day and did not eat a single bit of artificiality. I do plan on incorporating more real foods, but brother, give me back my DIET COKE!

Revolutionary Road
The movie got me thinking about my parents. For as long as I can remember, I don't think my parents were ever really happy in the life they built for themselves and I wonder if they felt like the couple in the movie. Endless days of putting on a facade and forcing themselves into some sort of mold of what they thought happiness should be when really everything was falling apart within them. At such extremes that they made horrible decisions that hurt so many people in an attempt to rescue themselves from their own misery.
It makes me sad to think about that, and at the same time so very glad that Mr. P and I paved our own road to get to our own happiness that I almost feel guilty.
Told you I was feeling angsty and weird. Seriously, I need to go find my Big Bang Theory DVD.
ETA: So last night I was all cocky in my love for my life and my husband. But now that Mr. P has BITCHED about my lack of accountability for iPod wires for an hour, I am seriously rethinking my position.

that is NOT New Jersey
After a scene where a hanger door from the Smithsonian leads to an airplane graveyard:
Mr. P (whispers): Exactly HOW did they get to Davis-Monthan? That is in Tuscon.
Then a few minutes later:
Mr. P (louder whisper) : That is NOT New Jersey.
DUDE, you have NO problems with the alien robots...but the locales not fitting with reality are a sticking point?????
By the by, love the Transformers.

all is whelmed
I hope I haven't lost all readers, and I really do want to get back with it...I miss you guys, I just am really out of it. I really want to catch up with all of you, and to tell you the story of how I taught my class for.an.hour. with my fly open. FLY. OPEN. Thank god Bea shamed me into new panties...at least they were cute and pink. I also saw The Hangover, and have to say I am so ashamed that I laughed the entire.movie. It is bad people. Awful. So fucking funny. AND, I lost 2 lbs, so am on the cusp of losing new weight this week.
I now have horrendous cramps and am going to bed. sob. sob. whine.

I knit sweaters, YO!
ETA: Damn Viacomm. What exactly did they make this video if they aren't going to let people watch it on YouTube? Try to sell it? Corporate bastards.

green is not my best color
I never had the idea to cook all 524 recipes in Julia Child cookbook and chronicle my adventures. It isn't like she scooped me or slighted me in ANY way whatsoever, but last night when I saw the trailer, I was bizarrely envious that her blog got turned into a movie.
Seeing that ad has inspired me. Instead of sitting here pouting that I don't have a movie, I need to be proactive and find my own list to accomplish and chronicle and get a movie....I am not sure that running 5K's with a double barrel water belt is going to cut it. UNLESS, I decide to run a 5K in all 50 states....mmm.
Let's see...what else? The whole Kama Sutra? no. my sister and kids read this, and I don't think Nora E. is up for porn, plus I think CK is already doing that. Going to 52 zoos in 52 weeks? NO, someone else is doing that. Live in each of the towns on the top 100 places to live list for one month? That would probably get expensive. Eat only McDonald's for a month? Damn, been done.
I am out of ideas, so here is the thing. I want to do something list-like, fun, and inexpensive and fairly quick to get over with because I bore easily (in fact, I am almost over it already). In addition, it needs to be SO awesome that I get a movie deal. If you suggest the right one, and I do it and get a movie deal...I will totally cut you in and send you free movie tickets. and maybe a TGIFriday's gift certificate, so you could go to dinner. and. a movie. damn. that is a good prize.
Because I am a planner and I have faith that someone will send me the exact.right thing to do to get a blog/book/movie deal, I need to start narrowing down the list of who should play me. At least we have already established that Denzel Washington will play the role of Mr. P.

I thought I was four degrees from DINOSAURS
Mr. P looked at me all funny and said, "Sam Shepard was not in Jurassic Park, that was Sam Neill. Plus, I met Sam Elliot."
mmm. oh. my bad. (in my defense he SAID Sam Shepard). I think.
Anyways, Mr. P also met Hal Moore of We are Solders (played by Mel Gibson), Basil Plumley, also of We are Soldiers (played by Sam Elliot) AND Theodore Roosevelt IV (great grandson of Theodore Roosevelt). All these dudes were at the grand opening of the big project Mr. P has been working on for three years.
So instead of being four degrees from dinosaurs, I am five degrees from cartoon Pocahontas (cartoon Pocahontas - Mel Gibson (cartoon John Smith) - Hal Moore - Mr. P - me) and only four degrees from The Hulk (The Hulk - Sam Elliot - Mr. P - me). sweet.
oh yeah. American History. I am pleased to report that my brother-in-law is at most 5 degrees from his very favorite president (wt - Mr. P - Teddy IV - Teddy Jr. - Teddy). He may already have established his own linkage, but just in case.

Would you consider this ironic?
I mix organic milk with maltodextrin, tetrasodium pyrophosphate and xantham gum among other things to create a sugar-free, fat-free banana cream pudding.
Hit me last night that if I was just going to add a bunch of shit to it, I may as well save a buck per gallon and go with the chemical laden milk.
We had a great date night, but it was kind of weird. I am not sure I can explain it right. We were sitting in a fairly empty, quiet restaurant, and we are NOT necessarily quiet people, so we sipped our water and had quiet conversation and left the cursing in the truck. We used all the correct cutlery, napkins on the laps, and Mr. P even stood up when I excused myself to powder my nose, and again on my return. Not that we are heathens, but it was just SO polite. ehh. I had a good time, but it was more "grownup" than we are, typically.
We came home, got snuggled up on the couch and watched a BRUTAL American Idol. Okay, bikini girl? really? I couldn't believe that new judge got all up and singing. Also, I thought Simon was exceptionally dicky last night. But, I sort of see his point, you know what the show is now after how ever many seasons, and that if you suck. that. bad. you are setting yourself up to be ridiculed. Not that it doesn't make me all squirmy and very interested in my iPhone during those auditions, but still guys, word, "If you suck, don't go on American Idol."
Oh, and I behaved in a way that can be only considered to be a mothering FAIL. Early Monday morning I get a text from the college kid saying that she doesn't feel good. So I text her back to get more details, but I will tell you I immediately felt irritated because I had seen on her Facebook that she went out both weekend nights, so I figured it was remnants of not getting enough sleep, etc. over the weekend, and I even texted her that she should take better care of herself. That evening, I sent Mr. P to her apartment with juice and medicine. Then yesterday, she got diagnosed with strep so far progressed that she had to get a shot in her ass, and can't go back to class until Friday. Still my first thoughts are damn, she is going to be so far behind and she is in organic chem this semester. aack. I sent Mr. P back to her apartment with more soup, popsicles, juice, and anything else he could perhaps add to a care package to assuage my guilt over not believing that she was really sick sick. Then she called me in the middle of dinner to tell me about her friend that made it on Survivor, so I think she must be feeling better. You might think after 19 years I would get better at mothering. Apparently NO.

I totally didn't even know that Lionel Richie was hungry
To be a bit more thorough I queried Mr. P as to his Lionel Richie knowledge and he said, I think his daughter is adopted and he sang "Lady". (He even sang a bit of it so that I would get his point.)
HOWEVER, if you google, "Lionel Richie Hunger Problem" you get my blog. Who knew? And if you have any other Lionel Richie trivia, comment away, and maybe we can start the LionelRichipedia.
PS Apparently there is a porn version of this song if you are interested.
