Sunrise, Sunset

Thanks for all the wishes of broken bones flying the way of my boy. In the local community theater spring musical, Fiddler on the Roof, highschool kid will be playing the role of Perchik. I have never seen this particular play, and had to read the synopsis on Wikipedia. To be fair, I also had to do that when he got cast as Simon Stinson in Our Town, Officer Brophy in Arsenic and Old Lace, and random cowboy in Oklahoma!. The only part he has ever played that I didn't have to Wikipedia was when he was Uncle Henry in Wizard of Oz (he also played the dude guarding the Emerald City).

Best of all...he beat out his acting nemesis. In EVERY school production, this one kid has beat highschool kid out for the role he wanted. After highschool kid came in third in the STATE in a drama competition, and the nemesis didn't even make the cut, highschool kid asked his teacher what the deal was. She told him that with nemesis in the play, more kids would come to the production because he was more popular. Apparently, popularity doesn't mean jack in community theater!

Oh, did I mention that I have to volunteer for the theater group for a minimum of 3 hours so that he could be in the play since he is not 18? I hope I get to paint scenery. Tsarist Russia screams hot pink, no?

Yay! I was thinking about him (but not past 5:30!) and that's awesome. I have no talent whatsoever when it comes to theater, singing, dancing, or anything like that. And they picked the other kid because he was more popular? I always thought the arts didn't care about that.

I love that he beat out his acting nemesis! Because I'm like that, and because I, too, had a nemesis in high school. And I finally beat her on something and it rocked.

That is very cool! When is the play?

Contratulations to HS Kid! That is awesome... and supremely funny about the nemesis. Love those kinds of victories. Stupid Drama Teacher!
Good luck on getting to put your touch on the colors!

Uh, that drama teacher? Needs to be smacked. As a theatre educator (we get to be called theatre educators when it's on the college level...), it hurts my heart that high school teachers are training people in this way. Gr. I'm totally glad he beat out his acting nemesis. Someday perhaps I will blog about my college nemesis.

My husband and I met while we were rehearsing for The Importance of Being Earnest, in high school. I was 16, he was 18. Keep an eye on that kid of yours. :-)

HA! I'm so glad he beat out that other kid! Plus, WTF was wrong with that teacher for saying that to him about popularity?!?! Hello, it's educational experience, not a popularity contest. Who cares how many people come?! What an asshat.

I think hot pink and feathers for Russia. Maybe some bows and ribbons, too. :)

Wait, high school teacher admitted drama is nothing more than a popularity contest that is loosely based on talent? That's pathetic! Glad your high school kid gets to shine!

I cannot believe what the teacher said about the popularity factor. I'm so glad highschool kid's talent has let him rise above that.
