Scathed.

Several bloggers have posted about how the economic downturn has impacted them...other than my tiny stock portfolio taking a hit, we have been relatively unscathed. Until today.

Mr. P's company had a staff meeting where they were informed of an across the board 10% pay cut for all staff. Also, no more 401K matching, and no more gym membership reimbursement. BUT, on the bright side, Fridays are now half-day...so with a 10% pay cut, they get to work 10% less. Except for Project Managers. Remember that promotion Mr. P got? Yup, it was to project manager. However, things could be MUCH worse, and we are grateful that it is just 10%.

That all being said, we are still in pretty good shape...as long as I get tenure. Speaking of which, Alain still hasn't made his decision about my paper. I hope he makes a GOOD decision soon.

Totally unrelated: We have no Thai restaurants in our town, and I love me some hot, hot food. Because of the aforementioned staff meeting, Mr. P was at the main office of his firm today and that office is in a much bigger town and tonight he brought home some stir fry with chicken, mushrooms, onion and broccoli. 8 out of 8 chili's hot. It was amazing, and VERY Weight Watcher friendly. So even with the paycut news, today turned out al.right.

I'm sorry to hear that about Mr. P's paycut. It is getting a little scary out there. I am relieved to be in academia, too. I can just feel it in my bones that Alain is going to love your paper and in fact be totally jealous that he didn't write it himself.

That sucks. While 10% pay cut is better than 100% pay cut, it still sucks. My hubs used to be a PM too. It was a 24 hr. a day job at times.

And don't you love hearing about companies that are doing this to the employees, yet the execs still get their bonuses and perks? Not that Mr. P's company is that way as their pay cuts are across the board. It makes me angry- I wish there was a way for the government to go into their bank accounts and take some of their million dollar bonuses out to give to their employees.

Sorry to rant. Blame it on the economy stress I'm under. And my ipod broke. Not fixable even.

Bea: OH NO, not the iPod. I will say the partners at Mr. P's firm took 20% paycuts, and Mr. P feels like they are doing everything they can to drum up business, etc.

ChezJulie: THANKS!!

Sucks about the pay cut, but I love your attitude about it. Oh, I'm sure you're upset about it; but you come off as, "We will get through this" and "we're going to focus on the good."

That's great! Very healthy attitude!

I'm sorry about this. We feel guilty complaining about the economy too, the fact that we have any savings at all to watch dwindle. But damn, we needed that savings if we are going to pursue ANY other steps towards having a family, be it cycling OR adoption. And it sucks on the timing!

But hooray for spicy spicy food, that can make everything better :)

My favorite is "Twirl Twirl Twirl"--seriously I have to dance around the house when it's on at home :) And yes, I realize I am biased.

I really think it's fantastic that companies are choosing across the board pay cuts rather than layoffs. It's a move that is better for the economy, for the country, and for the individual. If I were given a choice I would definitely take a pay cut rather than lose my job, or rather than others losing theirs.

So it's awesome that Mr P works for a company that is using its brains, and even more awesom that you got some super spicy food!

That is a great attitude to have. 10% does suck, but at least he didn't get completely "down-sized." I hope this won't be too hard on you guys. And I'm glad you have smart children with scholarships!

Want me to go to Alain's house and light a fire under him? Cause I will...

We do not have one single Thai restaurant within 20 miles of us that I know of. I wish I'd known of your love for Thai food when you were in NJ. I would have told you to go to Red Garlic in Manhattan. Oh. My. Word. BEST Thai food EVER.

Yes, I have noticed that. Team Lean is becoming Team Lame! It's funny... when I started the challenge I selected some people for my blogroll that I could relate to and that seemed motivated as far as nutrition and exercise. They are all still posting regularly and keeping the faith, while lots of other people haven't posted or reported weigh-ins for weeks. (I wish Lynn and Angie would remove eliminated people from the BLBE blogroll so we didn't have to sort through to find out who is still participating). And to be gooey, I have found the online support to be fantastically motivating. Much better than a WW meeting where I never really got to know anyone and I wasn't keeping myself accountable.

I think it's impressive when companies can find creative ways to keep their employees. Even if it means everyone has to cut back a bit. I considered myself very lucky to still have a job when I learned I wouldn't be getting a pay raise this year.

wow--i'm glad you are so incredibly positive about the whole thing. a paycut would suck, but right now it is way better than the alternative. and it sounds like mr.p's company is at least trying (very impressive that the partners took a bigger paycut than their employees). i think there are so many companies that don't even care about their employees.
