maybe it isn't about the books----

One thing I don't get about being a professor is how I am seemingly responsible for personally stocking the bookstores with the text that I am requiring. I put my syllabus and a reading schedule on the course website WEEKS ago that included the information that there was required reading for tomorrow's class. I read my students the riot act on Monday that they are.to.be.prepared.for.class. So, today, I must have heard from 10 students that they can't find the books in any bookstore around and what-so-ever should they do??? These are GRADUATE students---duh---heard of Amazon.com? BooksAMillion? Any of a hundred different options for buying books? (I assign a reference book, not a text book.)

But better yet, not only can they not find the books...but what should they do to prepare since they don't have the book...they can't read the assigned pages....OH MY, there are no other books or information anywhere on the Internet or in the real world that gives a basic overview of the material...NO WHERE. fucking idiots. This is going to be an awesome semester.

Maybe it is about the time I head to CVS for some Midol. Ya think?

Quick updates:

~The energy is still escaping me.
~Going green is going quite well so far. I took the shuttle today, and I liked it!

It comes from coddling them all through High School and now undergraduates are getting coddled too. It is amazing the stuff my son tells me kids get away with at College, I sometimes think noone wants to deal with these BRATS BUT just remember they do enter the 'real world' and EMPLOYERS don't coddle just remember that eventually they get it in the face!!! Until then, sorry you have to listen to the griping but I'm not thinking it is going to change anytime soon, parents coddle the kids today to the extreme.

I suppose my "I hope your students are smart" text kinda jinxed you. I'm sorry that your Grad students can't Google the book you require or they can't look up whatever the assigned reading was on.

Lazy bastards! Oh, wait. I was a lazy grad student too...what can you do? You're not their mom. I tell you working out in the morning only makes you tired earlier and yay for going green!

Oh right. Grad school. I forgot about that and I did it twice. I just had that yucky feeling/reminder of hunting around for books and allow me to say I am ever.so.grateful. that I will not be going to anymore graduate schooling any time soon.
I hope they get their acts together soon--don't they realize how lucky they are to have the HP as their leader??

i hate hearing stuff like this but yet i see examples of it all the time. (i live in a college town)

for various reasons, i wasnt able to go to college. long story short i had to work to support myself. i HATE it when people are given the opportunity and dont take it seriously.

Wow, more geniuses. You know, sometimes I think the more advanced a degree a person has, the less common sense they hold onto. It's like their brain had to purge it out to make space for the rest of the stuff or something.

A lot of my classmates were like this - lazy assholes. These are the people that grow up to be the coworker who never does anything. Jerks.
