I don't want to get bumped.

This article has my guts in turmoil. I thought I was afraid to fly before, now I am petrified.

What if the attendants look at me and KICK ME OFF THE AIRPLANE?

I have no flight scheduled until the end of July, but even at a good rate of loss, I will not be a waif at that point. Now, not only do I have to worry about dying in a fiery crash, but I might die of embarassment when I get asked to buy two tickets, or made to wait for a whole other flight.

Don't get me wrong, I know that my size should not infringe on the rights of other people. I get that. It isn't the policy that I don't like...it is the realization that I may be an example of why they wrote the policy in the first place that kind of takes a cheap shot to the ego.

I think that it is flat out wrong. They know damn well that those seats are too small. If they weren't so stingy and were not trying to fit as many people on a flight as they possibly can in order to squeeze every penny out that they can get, we might all be able to be comfortable when we fly.

This is an issue that has pissed me off for a long long time, and I am a thin person. I cannot even imagine how difficult it must be for a heavier person to fly, and now this sort of tripe is acceptable? No way. It infuriates me.

It's going to be okay. Take a deep breath. I KNOW that that isn't going to happen to you... but you can't change what's going to happen... so just take a breath and do your best to go with the flow! *hugs*

I agree with Tara. The seats are small. All of our rights are violated when they are trying to squeeze adults in child sized seats (ok, maybe adolescent sized seats). And sharing arm rests too!

Poor HP. You don't need this kind of anxiety! I hate airline seats even if an anorexic sits next to me. Because then her bony elbow will be bothering me.
Try not to stress. You're working so hard and remember: being a waif is not the point. Being healthy and living life, that is the point.

Ouch. I can't even imagine how embarrassing that would be. I have always managed to be able to squeeze into the seats and seatbelts on airplanes, but I would be the first to be booted off a flight if it were sold out.

This is just one more thing I can look to when I'm trying to keep myself from cheating on my diet...

OMG. This whole thing could be avoided if airlines weren't so space-freaky. I mean, those seats are SMALL. Plus, if they asked height and weight when you buy your ticket, they would be able to determine things like this in advance and avoid the whole thing. Sheesh. I feel bad for the stewardesses, too, having to do this. I mean, if that were my job, I would rather die than make someone feel like that.

You will be fine. Flights are almost half empty these days, anyway, and you will make it. If you're that concerned, make sure you get an aisle seat, or one in the back of the plane, where there are usually less people. But, I think you'll be OK.

In Canada I believe (but don't quote me on it) there was a recent court case that said that making an obese person (not that I am saying you are obese at all, just talking about the case) pay for 2 seats if they were big enough to need 2 seats was discrimination so I'm guessing the bumping would be discrimination too (at least in Canada).

If anything like that happens (and it will NOT happen), just remember you know a good lawyer :)

I think you should just be so proud of yourself that you are doing so great! AND now you won't have to worry about stuff like this because you are actively working on it.

i reeeeeally doubt you'll see united enforce this very much. every time an airline has done something similar it's a HUGE media circus (remember the southwest fiasco?) and tons of bad publicity for the airline. right now, they're just announcing that it will be the policy... but omg. i would never be able to enforce it, as a flight attendant. how horrible. so what i'm trying to say here, poorly, is: you'll be fine :-)

They're acting as if they have no other choice, and that's pissing me off. Why don't they make some seats that are bigger, and seat heavier passengers in those? I get where they're coming from, but it seems to me that they need to change something physical rather than requiring their passengers to do so.

Look, I need three seats for myself, one for me and two for my titties. Those seats are too small for the 'average' person. God forbid they make them a little bigger and let us all be comfortable. They must have missed the "people come in different shapes and sizes" memo. They should have a 'healthy' section and a 'really healthy' section, imo. I would plant my ass in the really healthy section, me and my two titties.
