it's OK to be fat and work out...

I have been struggling with food lately, having more bad days than good, so today before I decided on my lunch I found the 'Where are they now' episode of Biggest Loser online and am watching it now (in another window, of course). At the beginning of the episode the doctor made a comment about one of the impacts the show has made on America and it is that the show has made it so that it is okay to be fat and work out. That is really resonating with me.

It took me a long time to feel okay about going to fitness classes, using the weights at the gym, running on the treadmill, running in public...I still wonder if people who pass me or see me are thinking things like:

A little late, dontcha think?

or maybe,

That isn't going to help you, Fattie McFat.

But you know what? I think I (mostly) don't care anymore.

On a somewhat related note, for which I could figure out no graceful or clever transition, I read a post today that inspired me to do something else for my health, and that is to make my appointment for my "annual exam" (I think it has been three years since my last one, OOPS) so that I can then get a referral for a baseline mammogram now that I am at the big 4-0.

Okay, back to the Biggest Loser episode...it ended on the note of finding a DAY TO DAY way to live a healthier life...not the Biggest Loser ranch way, but a real-life way that you can do for.ever. I am definitely NOT there yet, but heading that way for sure.

So on that note, before some lunch, I will get in my last run before the 10K on Saturday, then will have a nice pasta with chopped spinach and broccoli.

When I see ANYONE working out, I think "Wow! Good for them!" (except for that dumb woman in the gym who uses the equipment to balance herself while she does high kicks).

I really hope people don't think things like that!

I am super excited for your 10k!

P.S. Tricia's blog rocks. Just found it this week. Check her out! :)

I am always impressed with anyone working out, no matter what "shape" they appear to be in...because hey, you ran SEVEN MILES the other day. I huffed my way through 5.5 today and nearly died.

And tonight I had spaghetti squash in your honor.

Anybody working out I say, "good for them!" Why would someone put somebody down for working out? That is crazy, there is no logic in that at all. We all fight our demons and we have good days and bad days but putting someone down for working out makes no sense, no sense at all.

i'm glad you made the boob squashing appointment : )
i am always in awe of anyone working out, running, biking, etc. except there is this one guy in our town...he is very, very large. we have lived here for more than 10 years and we see him riding his bike around town all the time. he's the same size today as he was 10 years ago. i do not see how that is possible.

I agree with you that Biggest Loser made it seem OK for heavy people to work out. Never thought of it that way. They did for exercise what Oprah did for pleasure reading.

When I see anyone jogging, walking, working out, etc. I always think, "Good for them ... I oughta be doing that too."

RYC: Thanks for your comment. That made me feel better to know I'm not the only one.

I used to always worry about what others in the gym thought of me and sometimes I still do. It has more to do with my own insecurities than anything else.
I did watch that BL episode and I really appreciated seeing life after the ranch. It's difficult to maintain weight loss, and I think it was good for people to see that even after losing massive amounts of weight, it's still a struggle.
